*Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has dismissed the minister for human rights, Silvio Almeida, who has been accused of sexual harassment. The human rights ministry will be managed in the interim by Esther Dweck, the minister for management and innovation in public services. The scandal first emerged on 5 September, when news website Metrópoles revealed that Me Too Brasil, an organisation that offers support to women who have experienced sexual violence or harassment, had received reports from multiple women accusing Almeida of sexual misconduct. The news outlet did not reveal how many women have accused Almeida, but it did report that one of the women allegedly harassed by Almeida was Anielle Franco, the minister for racial equality. Government officials such as Cida Gonçalves, the women’s minster as well as civil rights groups such as the Coalizão Negra por Direitos have expressed solidarity with Franco and other women who experienced sexual harassment. After Almeida was dismissed on 6 September, Franco took to social media to thank Lula for his “firm response”.
