In brief: Honduras approves electoral budget after fierce debate

*Honduras’ congress has unanimously approved a budget of L1.49bn (US$60.2m) for the primary and general elections in March and November 2025 respectively. Differences between the ruling left-wing Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) and the main opposition parties, Partido Nacional (PN) and Partido Liberal (PL), over the budgetary allocation for the national electoral council (CNE) delayed the budget’s approval. Honduras is in the grip of heightened political tensions after the release of a video implicating President Xiomara Castro’s brother-in-law, Carlos Zelaya, in a campaign finance scandal involving drug traffickers. Castro responded combatively by claiming her government was at risk of a “coup d’état” being orchestrated by “dark forces at home and abroad”.
