COLOMBIA: EMC fractures in major blow to ‘total peace’ plan

Hopes are fading fast for a negotiated peace settlement with Colombia’s Estado Mayor Central (EMC) – the largest alliance of dissident units from the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group. On 16 July President Gustavo Petro’s government terminated a ceasefire with more than half of the EMC’s units, with just three EMC factions now remaining in peace talks.
