In brief: Cuba promises renewable energy revolution

*Cuba’s minister of energy and mines, Vicente De La O Levy, has said the country is working on a transition strategy towards renewable energy and renovation of old thermoelectric power plants after enduring a “tense” August with widespread power cuts. The minister blamed the blackouts that have become a feature of life for Cubans, but were particularly pronounced during August, on “extremely high” demand and a lack of imported fuel. But he forecast an improvement in 2025, saying that Cuba planned to add 2,000 megawatts (MW) to the energy matrix by 2028 with the installation of 92 new solar parks. The director of renewable energy at the ministry, Rosell Guerra, said work had been completed on 30 of these parks already.
