Bolivia’s deeply polarised political landscape has formed two opposing interpretations of the military uprising of 26 June, when the army’s top commander, General Juan José Zúñiga, stormed the presidential palace only to beat a hasty retreat after speaking with President Luis Arce. Whilst the government says that it narrowly survived a coup attempt, Zúñiga claims that he was instructed by Arce to stage an insurrection in order to boost the government’s popularity ahead of next year’s general election.
