In its World Drug Report published on 26 June, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlighted the challenges presented by synthetic drugs. Often cheaper, faster, and more profitable to produce and traffic than plant-based drugs, criminal organisations across the world have increasingly made the shift to synthetics, with Mexico’s Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) and the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) chief among them.
