*The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac) has sanctioned Haiti’s former president Michel Martelly (2011-2016), accusing him of involvement in drug trafficking. A statement from the US Treasury says that Martelly “abused his influence to facilitate the trafficking of dangerous drugs, including cocaine, to the United States”. It also alleges that he “engaged in the laundering of illicit drug proceeds, worked with Haitian drug traffickers, and sponsored multiple Haiti-based gangs”. Under the sanctions, Martelly is blocked from receiving credit from US financial institutions, from engaging in foreign exchange transactions that are subject to US jurisdiction, and from engaging in investment activities with US citizens. The US acting undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, Bradley Smith, said that the action against Martelly “emphasises the significant and destabilising role he and other corrupt elites have played in perpetuating the ongoing crisis in Haiti”. Martelly was previously sanctioned by Canada in November 2022.
