El Mayo puts Morena under pressure in Mexico

Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada García, the co-founder of the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) who was arrested in the US at the end of July, released an explosive statement on 10 August that has pointed to the murky links between politicians and DTOs in Mexico. In the statement, the drug kingpin speaks of collusion between high-level Sinaloa state officials and his criminal organisation, as well as corroborating theories that he was taken against his will to the US [WR-24-30]. The letter has thrown up yet more questions about the operation to capture Zambada, who was arrested alongside Joaquín Guzmán López, the son of his fellow co-founder, Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera.
