*Honduras’ President Xiomara Castro has met with China’s deputy foreign minister, Hua Chunying, in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, to discuss cooperation. Discussions covered a range of topics, including the progression of a free trade agreement (FTA) which is currently under negotiation, and financial support for various projects in Honduras. The meeting comes days after Honduras’ foreign ministry announced that an early harvest agreement (EHA) with China would take effect on 1 September, allowing Honduran shrimp and other seafood products to enter the Chinese market duty-free. Also yesterday, Honduras’ foreign minister, Eduardo Enrique Reina, and China’s ambassador in Honduras, Yu Bo, signed an agreement for a feasibility study for the construction of 300 educational centres in Honduras. The two countries forged bilateral relations in March 2023, after Honduras severed ties with its long-time ally Taiwan in search of Chinese trade and investment.
