In brief: Industrial production edges up in Mexico

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has published the latest data for its monthly index of industrial activity (Imai), showing that industrial production rose by 0.4% in monthly and yearly terms in June 2024. This compares to a year-on-year rise of 1.0% in May when the Imai increased by 0.7% in monthly terms. The monthly result in June was driven by 0.1% drop in utilities (electricity generation and transmission, provision of water and gas), a 2.0% drop in mining, and a 2.3% decrease in construction, while manufacturing was up 2.0%. In yearly terms, utilities were up by 3.5%, construction by 1.4%, and manufacturing by 0.8%. This was somewhat offset by a 4.4% decrease in mining. In the first half of the year, industrial production was up 1.4% as compared to the first half of 2023.
