GUATEMALA: Arévalo-Porras tensions rise

Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo has presented a second criminal complaint against discredited attorney general María Consuelo Porras, calling for her to be stripped of her immunity from prosecution for abuse of authority and violating the constitution. The first was filed at the end of February [WR-24-09], just over a month after the anti-corruption reformist president took office following his remarkable August 2023 election victory. Arévalo’s actions come as Porras, who is associated with the ‘pacto de corruptos’ network of institutional corruption which he pledged to take on, has responded with more legal actions, in what is the latest sign that the power struggle between the two looks set to dominate his mandate.
