COLOMBIA: ELN ceasefire expires

The central pillar of the Colombian government’s peace agenda is swaying after a ceasefire with the country’s largest guerrilla group, the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), expired on 3 August. The ELN had insisted on being removed from the government’s list of organised armed groups (GAOs) as a condition for extending the ceasefire. There is still some hope that the ceasefire could be revived, with the group saying that it will not resume its attacks on the security forces until 23 August.
