*Brazil’s agriculture ministry has announced that the outbreak of Newcastle disease detected among commercial poultry has been contained. The first case of the virus was confirmed on 17 July. Two days later the government announced 21-day chicken export bans affecting exports to 44 countries to varying degrees. Since there have been no more confirmed cases, the agriculture ministry expects that it will not extend the export suspensions. Even though the export bans are likely to be lifted, authorities will continue to monitor the farm where the one confirmed case was detected. The farm was in Anta Gorda municipality, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. The government’s animal health emergency teams will continue to operate in the farm for another 42 days, in case the virus resurges. Containment protocols will also continue in farms within a 10km radius of the confirmed case.
