Brazil: On 18 July US National Security Advisor
Jake Sullivan hosted a meeting at the White House with Brazil’s chief foreign policy advisor and former foreign minister (2003-2011),
Celso Amorim. The main agenda of the meeting was to discuss the progress in enhancing bilateral ties between the US and Brazil. According to a statement released by the White House, the pair also discussed the Partnership for Workers’ Rights (PWR), a programme launched by US President
Joe Biden and Brazil’s President
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in September 2023 on the margins of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The programme is a partnership between the US and Brazil that aims to “
empower workers” and “
combat some of the most significant issues facing working people,” including forced labour, workplace discrimination, and heat stress. In addition to the PWR, the two officials discussed global and regional priorities, highlighting Haiti, Venezuela, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the Middle East as key focus areas. This meeting marks the first gathering between US and Brazilian officials at the White House since February 2023, when President Biden hosted President Lula to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding democracy and combatting climate change, with a particular emphasis on protecting the Amazon.
