Introduction

In the first article of this July 2024 edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Mexico we look at one of the biggest challenges facing President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum when she takes office in October: insecurity. As well as combatting Mexico’s powerful drug trafficking organisations (DTOs), other challenges for Sheinbaum, who won the 2 June election by a landslide, include addressing femicides and violence against women, tackling the country’s disappearance crisis, and engaging with the US priorities of fentanyl and migration.
