*Honduras’ government led by President Xiomara Castro has announced that the process is under way to export the first 36 tonnes (t) of shrimp shipments, produced by local firm Camarsur, to China. This follows an early harvest law approved on 17 July by the 128-member unicameral legislature allowing the exportation of shrimp to China, ahead of the approval of a free trade agreement (FTA) which the two sides are negotiating. Writing on social media, Honduras’s foreign ministry says that with the approval of the early harvest law, it is expected that some 250 containers of shrimp will be exported to China, from Camarsur as well as from other companies. The two countries established bilateral relations in March 2023 after Honduras severed ties with its long-time ally Taiwan in search of Chinese trade and investment.
