*The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has visited the Itaipú dam, one of the world’s largest hydroelectric complexes, which is shared by Paraguay and Brazil, during a trip to Paraguay. On social media, Georgieva said it was “amazing to witness” the “magnificent” dam. A post on the Itaipú Paraguay official social media page thanked Georgieva for her visit and for “her expressions of appreciation for the contribution that we, as a hydroelectric company, make to the country by producing clean and renewable energy”. The Paraguayan director at Itaipú, Justo Zacarías Irún, and the financial director, Rafael Lara, accompanied Georgieva and her team on the tour, along with the president of Paraguay’s central bank (BCP), Carlos Carvallo, and the deputy minister of human capital and management at Paraguay’s economy and finance ministry, Andrea Picaso. During her time in Paraguay, Georgieva will meet with government representatives, female leaders, civil society, and the private sector. Following her visit to Paraguay, Georgieva will reportedly attend the G20 meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors in Brazil from 25-26 July.
