VENEZUELA: Opposition arrests continue in final stretch of campaign

Venezuela’s opposition is accusing President Nicolás Maduro’s government of waging an escalating campaign of repression in the run-up to the 28 July presidential election. On 16 July the Venezuelan NGO Foro Penal released a statement saying that 102 people had been arrested in relation to their support for the campaign of Maduro’s rival, Edmundo González of the Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD) coalition.
