Caribbean: On 9 July the US Agency for International Development (USAID) announced US$4.5m in humanitarian assistance for Grenada, Jamaica, and St Vincent & the Grenadines (SVG) following the damage caused by Hurricane Beryl, which wreaked havoc across the Caribbean from 29 June-4 July. According to USAID, in Jamaica, US$2.5m in aid will go on repairing homes, assisting with water and sanitation needs, supporting logistical operations, and providing essential relief items such as clean-up kits, hygiene kits, and tarpaulins. Grenada and SVG will receive US$1m each to bolster relief efforts and provide shelter and emergency relief items. “The United States and Embassy Kingston stand firmly in solidarity with the people of Jamaica during this challenging time,” said the US ambassador to Jamaica, N. Nick Perry, in a statement. “We are committed to providing the necessary support to help these resilient communities recover and rebuild.” The US ambassador to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Roger Nyhus, undertook a two-hour aerial tour of the areas affected by the hurricane in Grenada and SVG on 5 July. Nyhus later witnessed the hurricane’s impact on the ground in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, both islands belonging to Grenada, with the US’ embassy in Grenada’s principal officer, Frances Herrera, on 9 July. Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a category two storm on Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula on 5 July before making landfall in the US state of Texas on 8 July.
