VENEZUELA: Protests hit the prison system

Venezuela’s prison system was hit by a wave of hunger strikes for around a week from 9 June, with inmates demanding that the government take action to reduce a judicial backlog that can see inmates spend years in prison awaiting trial. This was just the latest episode of unrest to rattle Venezuela’s penitentiaries, many of which remain under only the partial control of the authorities despite a major military intervention last year.
