Fujimori in the dock as corruption trial begins

The long-awaited trial of Keiko Fujimori for money laundering is finally underway in Peru. It is the biggest trial in the country since her father, former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), was convicted in 2009 of criminal responsibility for human rights abuses, murder, and kidnapping. There is a strong chance, given the complexity of the case and the sheer number of witnesses due to take the stand, that Keiko’s trial will not conclude before presidential elections in April 2026. Having come close but lost in each of the last three presidential elections, if things are going badly for her as the elections approach, she might opt to run for a senate seat to secure immunity from prosecution. The day before the trial, she pointedly said she would love her father, who formally joined her right-wing party Fuerza Popular (FP) last month, to run for the presidency in 2026.
