Hernández sentenced in Honduras

A US judge has handed down a 45-year prison sentence for drug trafficking and related weapons offences to Honduras’s former president Juan Orlando Hernández (2014-2022), to conclude a swift prosecution process. The sentencing of Hernández, the sub-region’s first former head of state to be found guilty of drug trafficking in the US since Panama’s former military dictator Manuel Noriega (1983-1989) in 1992, marks a rare victory in anti-impunity efforts. Entrenched corruption in Honduras, however, means it is unlikely to signal a turning point.
