MEXICO: SCJN under pressure over judicial reform

Members of the judiciary have begun discussing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s proposed judicial reform in open forums with legislators. This is in keeping with the promise of President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum that the government will hear out key stakeholders’ views on the reform. However, sources consulted by the press suggest supreme court (SCJN) justices remain divided over the reform. These internal divisions do not bode well as the judiciary attempts to negotiate a reform that is in its interest.
