Ecuador’s national assembly issued a denial this week that it had any intention of removing President Daniel Noboa from power on the grounds of mental incapacity. The fact that it was forced to come out with such a statement is testament to the rapidly deteriorating relations between the Noboa administration and much of the legislature, particularly the left-wing Revolución Ciudadana (RC), the party loyal to former president Ecuador Rafael Correa (2007-2017) which has most seats. Noboa is leaving no stone unturned in his efforts to retain power right up to presidential elections on 9 February 2025, when he will be seeking re-election, rather than take an enforced leave of absence that would see his estranged vice president take over, but legislators thwarted him this week.
