GUATEMALA: Arévalo touts progress in 100-day balance sheet, key pledge is pending

In late April Guatemala’s new President Bernardo Arévalo marked the first 100 days of his mandate. In a balance sheet he trumpeted various actions, mainly related to his election-winning pledge to tackle the ‘pacto de corruptos’ network of institutional corruption. However, he continues to struggle with fulfilling a key promise – removing the country’s discredited Attorney General María Consuelo Porras, who remains a major thorn in the side of his government’s efforts to tackle impunity.
