NICARAGUA: Ortega family feud erupts

If there were any doubt about the utter ruthlessness of Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega in stamping out any perceived threat to his authoritarian rule the treatment of his own brother lays it to rest. Just three weeks after being placed under house arrest retired General Humberto Ortega reportedly suffered a heart attack and was transferred to military hospital on 11 June. President Ortega had his younger brother placed under house arrest for treason after he cast doubt on a dynastic succession in Nicaragua and advocated democratic elections.
