MEXICO: Insecurity harms avocado industry in Michoacán
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has suspended inspections of avocados and mangos in the western state of Michoacán citing security concerns, meaning the state cannot export these products to the US. This is not the first time that the US has halted imports of avocados from Michoacán, one of the world’s biggest producers of the fruit, on security grounds, following a similar suspension in 2022. The decision is indicative of the wider security issues plaguing Michoacán and Mexico’s avocado sector in general.
