In brief: Labour reform bill clears first legislative hurdle in Colombia

*A legislative commission in Colombia’s lower chamber of congress has given the green light to the labour reform bill submitted by President Gustavo Petro’s government. The bill, which was approved by the commission with 14 votes in favour and four against, will be debated by the lower chamber in a plenary session after the legislative recess, which begins tomorrow (20 June) and will last for a month. The commission approved 75 of the 98 articles that were originally in the bill, and added six new articles. The government says that the legislation is needed to improve workers’ rights, although conservative lawmakers have expressed concern about its impact on business. Among other things, the bill would improve workers’ ability to claim overtime by gradually reducing the working week.
