*El Salvador’s Centro de Monitoreo del Fondo de Conservación Vial (Fovial), a government-owned entity in charge of overseeing El Salvador’s road network, has reported 360 incidents as a result of heavy rainfall, including 151 fallen trees, 153 landslides, and 46 flooded roads among other things. On 16 June the government led by President Nayib Bukele declared a state of emergency due to heavy rains to facilitate the mobilisation of resources. On 17 June Luis Amaya, the head of El Salvador’s civil protection agency, was widely cited by the international media as reporting 11 deaths so far as a result of the rains which have similarly affected El Salvador’s neighbours – in particular Guatemala and Honduras - since earlier this month. Yesterday Guatemala’s national coordinator for disaster reduction (Conred) reported 478 incidents related to the rains, which have killed eight people in the country and affected 1.97m people. Also yesterday, Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo said that the country’s main highway towards the Pacific, part of which collapsed as a result of the rains, would take three weeks to repair.
