GUATEMALA: Arévalo seeks to combat poverty

Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo launched two cash transfer initiatives on 10 June. Upon making the announcement, he said “these transfers will help us ease the high cost of living for buying food in Guatemala”. They would, he said, “mitigate” and “alleviate” the cost of living for vulnerable families in the capital and rural areas. He added that overall, the government would be spending Q150m (US$19.4m) to help poor families buy food.
