*Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has appointed Luis Carlos Reyes as his new minister of trade, industry and tourism, replacing Germán Umaña Mendoza. Local media reported that Petro requested Umaña’s resignation last month in order to resolve tensions between Reyes, who was then the director of the tax authority (Dian), and Finance Minister Ricardo Bonilla. Bonilla had reportedly grown frustrated at Dian’s failure to meet tax revenue targets under Reyes’ leadership, leading Petro to move Reyes to his new position. Umaña’s exit was unexpected, as he was well regarded by congress and the local media. According to a statement released yesterday by the trade, industry & tourism ministry, Reyes will focus on advancing the government’s industrial policy, decarbonising the economy, and attracting tourism.
