In brief: International tourism up in Mexico

*Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur) has reported that international visitors brought in US$12.51bn in the first four months of 2024, reflecting an 8.2% increase from the same period in 2023 and a 36.8% rise from levels seen prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in 2019. The period saw 14.7m international tourists visit Mexico, a 6.4% increase from the same period in 2023 and 0.2% more than in the first four months of 2019. The tourism minister, Miguel Torruco Marqués, highlighted that revenue from international tourists reached US$11.67bn, up 7.7% from the same period in 2023 and 39.4% from 2019. In April alone, 3.5m international tourists visited Mexico, a 4.7% increase compared to April 2023, according to the national statistics institute (Inegi). The overall spending by these tourists increased by 1.7% year-on-year, totalling US$2.49bn.
