JAMAICA: Government and opposition at odds over reform process
Given that a general election must be held in Jamaica by September 2025, only a little over a year from now, it is perhaps not surprising that constitutional reform has become a contentious political issue. The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), under Prime Minister Andrew Holness, wants to make Jamaica a republic, dropping the British Crown as head of state, and so does the main opposition People’s National Party (PNP). But that is where the agreement ends; and, in the absence of consensus on key issues, the constitutional reform process is now running up against the exigencies of the electoral calendar.
