NICARAGUA: Drawing closer to Moscow

In late April a high-level Nicaraguan delegation led by presidential adviser Laureano Ortega, the son of President Daniel Ortega and First Lady and Vice President Rosario Murillo, paid a visit to Russia where it met with officials including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss issues primarily related to security. The delegation’s visit follows other signs of burgeoning bilateral cooperation in security and other areas as the Nicaraguan government, faced with multiple rounds of sanctions by traditional allies like the US in response to ongoing human rights abuses, is compelled to pursue alliances elsewhere.
