BRAZIL: Floods highlight climate vulnerabilities and inequalities

Since late April, heavy storms and severe floods have hit the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul. The state’s governor, Eduardo Leite, has described this as the worst climate-related disaster that Rio Grande do Sul has ever faced. However, although the scientific community has long warned that climate change would intensify extreme weather patterns in Brazil, it has now taken historic levels of flooding to stimulate debates about climate adaptation and justice.
