GUATEMALA: Arévalo moves on security pledge

While the new left-of-centre government led by President Bernardo Arévalo may be struggling with regard to one core anti-corruption promise – removing the discredited attorney general, María Consuelo Porras [WR-24-19] - it has been able to claim success in relation to other aspects. This week Interior Minister Francisco Jiménez boasted that authorities had recovered control of the Canadá maximum security prison, nicknamed ‘El Infiernito’, in Escuintla department. This is in line with the government’s declared security priority of tackling extortion, a key part of which is targeting prisons, given extortion is overwhelmingly planned from within prison walls.
