*Bolivia’s public works minister, Edgar Montaño, has said that the blocking of roads by protesters has caused economic losses of B$833m (US$120.5m) since 3 June. Montaño said that the protests had cost exporters B$760m and the industrial sector B$69m, on top of lost revenue for transport companies and the highways authority. The protests are being led by transport workers who are calling on the government to address shortages of fuel and US dollars. President Luis Arce’s government claims that false rumours of fuel shortages are being spread by the government’s main opponents – the faction of the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) that is loyal to former president Evo Morales (2006-2019), and Luis Fernando Camacho, the imprisoned governor of Santa Cruz who leads the far-right Creemos party.
