The EU and supply-chain deforestation

In mid 2023 the EU approved a Deforestation Regulation, known as EUDR. It applies to imports of seven main commodities: cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm-oil, rubber, soya, and wood, as well as other related products that have been made or fed with such commodities (likely including beef, charcoal, chocolate, leather, and printed paper products). These commodities will not be authorised for import or sale into the EU unless they meet three criteria: they must be deforestation-free; produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of origin; and covered by a due diligence statement to that effect.
