HAITI: Another PM named as new MSS deployment deadline floated

Haiti’s recently established nine-member transitional presidential council (TPC) has named Garry Conille as the country’s new prime minister, a post he previously held from 2011-2012. This is the TPC’s second attempt at making the appointment. Its first threatened to fracture the new body, which was established over a month ago as per an agreement brokered by the Caribbean Community in response to the unprecedented crisis in Haiti, where coordinated gang attacks in late February ultimately ousted the former prime minister, Ariel Henry (2021-2024) [WR-24-17]. The delays over the appointment – essentially the first task of the TPC – continue to raise doubts over the prospects of the new body, which has the mammoth job of steering Haiti towards elections which have not taken place since 2016, and collaborating with the foreign community on deploying a multinational security support mission (MSS).
