ECUADOR: Noboa blurs the truth in state of the nation speech

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has enjoyed sky-high approval ratings since winning a snap election in November last year. That popular support, however, is contingent on the government’s ability to restore public security and revitalise the troubled economy. In a sign that he is feeling the heat on both of these issues, Noboa was widely accused of citing inaccurate statistics during his 24 May state of the nation address to congress. Noboa’s alleged fudging of the numbers came as a poll showed his approval rating dropping sharply, although it remains very high by regional standards.
