In brief: Slight decrease in Brazil’s unemployment

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures for unemployment, showing a jobless rate of 7.5% for the rolling quarter of February-April 2024. This is down from the 7.6% unemployment rate registered for the rolling quarter of November 2023-January 2024 and from the 8.5% unemployment registered for February-April 2023. The total unemployed population in the rolling quarter ending April 2024 stood at 8.2m people, while the total employed population came to 100.8m. In a press release, the Ibge attributed the ticking down of unemployment to factors such as a recovery in retail and to the start of the school year, as temporary school staff have returned to work following summer holidays in January.
