In brief: Mexico’s flag carrier suspends CDMX-Quito route

*Mexico’s flagship airline Aeroméxico is temporarily suspending its route between Mexico City (CDMX) and Ecuador’s capital, Quito. According to a statement from Ecuador’s transport & public works ministry (MTOP), Aeroméxico will suspend the route from 1 July to December 2024, when it will evaluate whether to restart the route. MTOP advised passengers needing to travel between Ecuador and Mexico to do so with other airlines via a connecting flight, suggesting using Panama’s Copa Airlines with a layover in Panama City or Colombia’s Avianca with a layover in Colombian capital Bogotá. Aeroméxico has said it will offer protection to passengers who have booked to travel on the route after 30 June. The suspension of the route comes amid an ongoing diplomatic spat between Mexico and Ecuador after Ecuadorean security forces broke into Mexico’s embassy in Quito at the beginning of April to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas (2013-2017), who faces local corruption charges.
