Whilst Edmundo González may be the official candidate of the opposition coalition Plataforma Unitaria Democrática (PUD) in Venezuela’s 28 July election, it is María Corina Machado who calls the shots. The PUD’s disqualified first-choice candidate this week softened her stance when asked how the opposition might respond to human rights abuses committed under President Nicolás Maduro if it wins the election. Machado said that “there will be no revenge or vengeance”, amid concerns that the risk of prosecution will encourage Maduro to cling onto power in the case of defeat.
