In brief: Uruguay declares state of agricultural emergency

*Uruguay’s ministry of livestock, agriculture, and fisheries (MGAP) has announced an agricultural emergency lasting 120 days in two departments in eastern Uruguay: Rocha and Treinta y Tres. Speaking in a press conference yesterday, Uruguay’s agriculture minister, Fernando Mattos, said that the measure, which applies to 1.2m hectares (ha) of low-lying land, is a result of unprecedented levels of rainfall in the areas affected. He said that producers affected by the floods would able to receive “non-reimbursable loans and subsidised aid” through the country’s agricultural emergency fund, similarly to in 2023 when nearly US$40m in loans were handed out to producers.
