COLOMBIA: Economy stutters as political rift deepens

It has been a rough few weeks for Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro. His flagship health reform bill has been shot down in the senate, street protests flared up, and scandals threaten to engulf his left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition. On top of all that, the economy is struggling to regain momentum after coming to a virtual standstill last year. As a result, an increasingly frustrated Petro has dabbled in governing by decree and has told his supporters to prepare to mobilise, raising the country’s political risk profile.
