In brief: Mexico hails increase in tourism

*Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur) has announced that 11.2m international tourists entered Mexico in the first quarter of 2024, 6.9% more than in the same quarter of 2023 and 1.3% more than the first quarter of 2019, before the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic disrupted international travel. The income derived from international tourists in the first quarter of 2024 totalled US$9.17bn, up 9.5% on the same period of 2023 and a 41.7% rise on the first quarter of 2019. This comes after the national statistics institute (Inegi) released the results of its survey of international visitors (EVI) for March, showing that 4.13m international tourists visited the country that month, up 10.6% year-on-year. In March, income derived from international visitors totalled US$3.26bn, up 11.2% on March 2023.
