BRAZIL: Web of corruption behind Marielle Franco’s murder

Six years after the 2018 murder of Rio de Janeiro city councillor Marielle Franco and her driver Anderson Gomes, Brazilian police believe that one of the most high-profile political assassinations in recent years has been solved. On 24 March the federal police (PF) arrested the suspected masterminds who ordered her assassination and released a report suggesting that the interests of a network of allegedly corrupt politicians and their contacts in the city’s murky criminal underworld might have led to Franco’s murder.
