PERU: Shootdowns banned under new aerial interception policy

Peru’s congress has approved an agreement with the US that will see the two countries work together to intercept aircraft suspected of involvement in drug trafficking. A previous agreement had been suspended back in 2001 when a Peruvian fighter jet mistakenly shot down a plane carrying a US missionary and her young daughter. As a result of that incident, the latest agreement does not allow for the use of lethal force in aerial interceptions.
