Voters back militarisation of public security in Ecuador

The militarisation of Ecuadorean security policy which was ordered on an emergency basis in January is now set to be made permanent. In a referendum on 21 April, voters overwhelmingly backed a proposal to modify the constitution to allow the armed forces to confront organised crime groups. Voters also approved a raft of other mostly security-themed proposals which President Daniel Noboa argues are needed to tackle the growing power of criminal gangs.
