PANAMA: Little certainty as presidential race nears

With less than two weeks until Panama’s general elections on 5 May, major uncertainty persists – not least ongoing doubts surrounding the candidacy of the frontrunner, former security minister José Raúl Mulino (2010-2014), which has been challenged in the courts on a technicality. Mulino stepped in as the presidential candidate for Realizando Metas (RM), the new outfit of former president Ricardo Martinelli (Cambio Democrático, CD, 2009-2014) whose candidacy was struck down in March due to a money-laundering conviction [WR-24-05]. Amid uncertainty over Mulino’s participation, attention is also centred on the three candidates vying for second place: Ricardo Lombana (Movimiento Otro Camino); former president Martín Torrijos (Partido Revolucionario Democrático, PRD, 2004-2009), running for Partido Popular; and former minister of Panama Canal affairs (2009-2012) and foreign relations (2012-2013), Rómulo Roux (CD).
